Density in the ocean is primarily determined by:
Water that Sinks:
- Colder Water
- Density differences
Water that Sinks:
- Is dense
- Is found in a few small places near the poles
- Moves quickly , water will sink in a few days or weeks.
- Rises over the whole ocean.
- Rises very slowly
- Gradually becomes less dense, it takes about 1000 years for water to rise from the bottom of the ocean to the surface.
- Transport heat around the globe
- Affect our climate (if water took longer to rise, the surface could be warmer)
- Bring nutrients from the bottom of the ocean to the surface.
At 50 degrees south , estimate the temperature at the surface and at the bottom.
- Surface temperature: 3 degrees.
- Bottom Surface: 1 degree.
- Surface temperature : 27 degrees.
- Bottom temperature: 4 degrees.
- 50 degrees , because if is more dense it will have more salinity and it will sink faster.
- There is moe salinity at the nrth than in the south , besides there are many different temperatures at different spots.
